A video walk through my hometown, 40 years after I left, doesn't have much pleasant to show. The only surviving department store has no window displays, just racks pushed up against the windows. The Endicott-Johnson package store where I sold shoes in my first full time job is a China One restaurant. Sears and Penny's, once anchors downtown, are faceless blobs. The farther you get from the center, the drearier it grows. (See a related article: http://www.squidoo.com/binghamton-ny-small-town-america-where-i-grew-up)
