MovieCaptioner is a cross-platform software that allows you to easily add captions to your videos. By repeating short loops of a movie, you can easily type in what is being said to make your movies accessible. This can also be used to annotate movies, calling out specific things you want the viewer to notice. MovieCaptioner can also import text if you already have transcripts. Synching imported text is as easy as listening to the movie and clicking a button as each sentence is spoken. MovCaptioner can create embedded caption tracks, QT SMIL format, Flash captions, Adobe Encore captions, Spruce STL, Subviewer SUB, SubRip SRT (formats supported by both YouTube and Google Video), SAMI for Windows Media, and can also export text transcripts.

  • To get captions in DVD Studio Pro you should export either a Sonic Scenarist (SCC) caption file or the STL format. STL will give you subtitles and SCC will give you closed captions. Usually people use the SCC caption file to import into DVDSP for closed captions. The .smi format (SMIL) would not be used for that purpose.

  • I get this message when i try to open the file in quicktime

QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “synchronized multimedia integration language” format.

  • @jaynajay11fly Make sure you have QuickTime 7 installed. QuickTime X, the default movie player in OSX does not recognize these files. You can either download the QT7 installer from the Apple site or from your OSX install disk. I don't know why Apple went with QTX. It's not "done". Doesn't support many things that QT7 does. Also, you'll need QT7 Pro for embedding captions. It's a $30 upgrade to QT Player from Apple - well worth it!

  • Awesome! Simple, yet very informative demo.

  • @jaynajay11fly thanks! I am continually making improvements to MovieCaptioner. The version shown in the video is actually an older version. There is now a Windows version available as well. Thanks for watching and your comment!

  • What a kick ass demo. Thanks.

  • @preachinshawn thank you! I hope to redo these videos soon. the s/w has improved in many ways since I originally made them. i'm a one-man operation, so it's tough to do everything else I need to do besides improving the s/w. I have a Windows version that I"m working on as well. hopefully I can get that out soon, so more people can caption their videos.

  • @synchrimedia Thanks! I will update to QT7. Every time I save the file, it saves with the extension .smi. I am not able to get the file in DVD studio pro. Is it because .smi is a windows extension. How can i get this to work in the DVD studio pro? Thanks!

  • I am following the steps as you are demoing, but for some reason, I can not preview in the Quicktime. FYI...I downloaded the demo version of the software.

  • If you prefer, after you hit the Start button, you can hit Control+Spacebar to toggle the play on and off sort of like transcriptionists use the foot pedal. It will keep looping, but only if it reaches the end of the loop. So you can let it play till you hear a few words, stop it, type it in, then toggle it back on. Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for giving it a try.
