One of my favorite songs by a truly great songwriter.

Lyrics:

William the angel
Sits on the yellow line
William the angel
Stuck in the middle of the road
Staring out at his broken wing
He sheds a couple of tears
He says, "I haven't seen my friends
St. Paul or St. Peter, in 15 years."

William the angel
Sits on the yellow line
Says, "God are You crazy?
These humans seem a waste of my time.
Well, I've flown round the world
Seen many things
The victories and struggles they bear
And I tell them of Your love
How You watch, How You listen
They no longer seem to care."

This is my prayer
Before He returns me to Heaven
May my wing be repaired
Send me to Tokyo, Beirut or London
Doesn't matter to me.

I did what I was told
Still, I'd like to save one soul.

William the angel
Stands on the yellow line
There's now a state trooper
Wondering what's on his mind
"Well, I've seen both death
and destruction, sir
The cruelty of Nature and of Man.
But when God points left, you wander right, and follow your own plan."

William the angel
Walks the straight yellow line
William the angel
Says the answers can be simple sometimes
Why, consider the smile in a baby's eye
When its wrapped in its mother's arms
And consider the sound and the look of the sky after a violent storm.

"You've been forewarned
Before He returns me to Heaven
Sir, I'd like to move on
Send me to NY, Toronto or Berlin
Even the back of your car
Peace and joy are cliches, I know
Still, I'd like to save one soul
Just one soul."

Gloria in excelsius Deo

William the angel
Sits on the side of the road
The trooper says, "Be careful.
Haven't you got someplace to go?"
William says, "No. I'll just stay and wait," pointing to the remains of his wing.
He is offered a ride, he says
"Thank you. No, thank you.
I'm an angel to a king.

This is what I sing
Before He returns me to Heaven
May He fix my wing
Send me to Mexico City or Capetown
It doesn't matter at all.

There's always hope I was told
Still, I'd like to save one soul
Just one soul..."

  • This is my all time favorite Christmas album. Each year I get more from listening to this music then any other. He's so unique and very talented. I don't know why more people don't know of him...I sure will be one to spread the news to all my friends.

I especially like "When the baby grew up" too. Thanks for posting this wonderful and touching song for us all to enjoy.

  • I agree with everyone here. This is *the best* Christmas concert. Mathes is gifted; he truly is. A true musician's musician. :)

  • Would you consider posting more? Perhaps "When the Baby grew up"?? :-)

  • I kinda had this wacky idea I'd post a couple vids and encourage people to actually *buy* the concert...But I'll see what I can do. ;)

  • Thanks.I just wrote Rob a email about possibly doing another Christmas CD for us and he replied: "That is a great question. I would love to do another Christmas record eventually. I have done others, Evening Train and Orchestral Songs, both available on itunes but another Christmas one

would be fun. The issue is time, planning and budget. Keep it in your prayers. We will certainly do it one day.

    Rob"

Let's hope that "one day" is soon. :-)

  • Awesome. I have "Evening Train." Great album.

  • love the chords in this song!

  • Thumbs up if this song makes you cry :'(

  • My favorite modern Christmas song. It really evokes feelings of the season.

  • Attended your Christmas concert , the 17th. Wow! I had never heard of you until then. My attendance was arranged by Andy Dutter. What a treat! I've played William the Angel over and over. Cannot get enough of it. It's so mystical and magical; and delivered so beautifully. Your voice, expressions and the setting all were so well done. Hope to see you again soon.

  • i love this song. the first time i heard it was this year at one of my christmas concerts and a girl sang it and it was amazing.

  • Rob Mathes now has a huge fan of his music in the tiny Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. God bless you for uploading this, Piquichi123. ... And please upload "Wake up, it's Christmas Morning" in time for December 25th. The world needs to hear it in its concert setting :)

  • I bought this concert DVD pretty much 'blind' to its content. I purchased it because of Michael McDonald, Vanessa Williams and Ozzie Davis. I watched it for the first time last night and was awestruck (which is actually an understatement). There is such depth to Rob Mathes, to his lyrics, his composition and his artful and thoughtful arrangements. This song is a masterpiece in soulful sensitivity, no less. Hollywood, take cue because its storyline should be the basis of a hit movie!

  • @meezerlover Hello meezerlover.......hope this Christmas is soo much more full of love and the spirit of Christmas for you and yours.....Had no idea that this was near and dear to you too.......Our mutual friend Darwin turned me on to this DVD the music and Rob.....seems he personally knows many people including being a former roadie for Michael McDonald and the Doobies.....

  • I first heard this almost 10 years ago... still gives me chills. Thanks!!!
