I think a bit of lorikeet lovin' was rejected. At least they had a nice meal.

These rainbow lorikeets landed this morning on my balcony, looking for easy food. It happens from time to time in leafy areas of Sydney. They know humans are weak against plumage and cuteness.

Normally I wouldn't feed them, as it's better they eat in the wild, and I didn't have the right food for them. They're built for eating nectar from flowers.

But I had my camera nearby, so I crushed a quarter slice of soft bread and made sure they had some water to go with it.

Please see the National Parks and Wildlife info on rainbow lorikeets for why you should not make a habit of this: http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/npws.nsf/Content/backyard_buddies_lorikeets

  • you should have put fruit out for them, bread makes them sick! It's quite hypocritical of you to lecture on what not to feed them and then go and do it yourself for your own gratification!

  • You're right - it was just a spur of the moment thing because I had the camera. Sorry. I don't think I had any fruit handy - what kind of fruit would you suggest, and how should it be prepared?

  • Nasi and Ya pears are enjoyed by wild lorrikeets. They can like apples(red ) only if they are juicy, a little bit of sunflower seeds too and a fresh bowl of water everyday. In summer a spare bowl of water for a bird bath...

  • (continued on from last post)-I know how exciting it is when wild animals enter your space, you just want to encourage and watch them and feeding them is a good way of doing that it's just that so many people feed them the wrong foods and unintentionally do them more harm than good.I guess it's best to educate ourselves and others. If possible you could go for a nice walk and pick some Bottlebrush and put it in a big vase of water on your balcony, they'd love it!glad you appreciate them :)

  • I would suggest cutting up apple, nectarine, My rainbow lorikeet loves banana and red grapes.I've read that citrus fruits are too harsh on their stomaches and you should never give them bread and honey or bird seed which wears down their feathered tongue, and makes it difficult for them to get the nectar they need from native trees. You can buy a dry lorikeet mix from woolies and pet shops for around about $7 and put it in a container.I want to apologize if I sounded too harsh on you.

  • Well he tried and got denied lol, anyway lorikeets kick ass! their colours and sounds and everything about em is so cool, love em. Great job man and thanks for telling people the right thing to do.

  • i have lorikeet like that

  • Good on you for your warning against feeding them. you deserve for them to visit you!!!

  • Wow! You have such colorful wild birds there. He was definitely putting the moves on her. =) The drinking was especially cool to see up close!
