White male students sent a racist video to a black female student. I think that the way they are handling this is too gentle. What do you think?

Here's the original video of the white students rapping about a black girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCIql73glq4&feature=related

  • okay, first of all. you talk about how there's only a small minority of black students in the school. there's also only a small minority of racist students. you shouldn't judge the entire student body (of 3200, not 2500) based on four students. if you listen to practically anyone who goes there, stuy is an accepting, tolerant community for learning.

  • @onetwothree2292 First, ur twisting what I'm saying in this vid. I did not state that the entire student body & faculty of Stuy had racist mentalities. No one judged the entire student body. The way the situation was being handled was brought into question as well as the severity of the actions of the male students that made the video. The comment about you thinking black students making a similar vid wldn't be more sevrly punished is quite ridiculous. If something's wrong, it's wrong...period.

  • Go look at the quality of education in parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx compared to the schools that the Stuyvesant students have attended throughout their lives. You are brought up in an environment with unequal advantage at no fault of your own. It's a good thing that you had those opportunities, but you can't expect everyone else to of had them as well. This isn't about the blk student body, it's about racism. Lets try to keep the discussion focused on the main issue, shall we?

  • theres 1% black in the school because admission is based on test merit only, not anything else. admitting more "colored" people whom cant meet the criteria would be bs

  • @pwndown When a school is located in Manhattan, there's a damn good chance that there are many blk students who've been tutored and educated at a high degree and are able to pass the exams required to get into on of these schools. It's a matter of making an effort to get them to test and attend. Informing "colored" ppl, as you put it, about opportunities to test in order to attend these schools would also help increase their numbers. Just bc they're not testing doesn't mean they're not present.

  • @pwndown And what is merit only? The fact that those kids are statistically from wealthier and more educated families than people in the neighboring are? There is no such thing as "merit only" with teenagers. 90% of who they are is a direct reflection of who their parents are, what their parents have, who their parents know, and where they come from. You guys seem to only have a problem with preference when "colored" people are in question. ::eye roll::

  • @mwtwyman Were this a group of black males... The young Caucasian girl would have claimed fear for her life from these King Kong Black Guy gang rapping her and theyy would be handcuffed and removed from the school on camera on charges of threats and Cyber Bullying and the Zero Tolerance for verbal, video and anything else they could add would be put into immediate effect...

I simply hope Africans in America see the response for what it is.

  • 72% or the school is asian. We're not talking about people form wealthier and more educated families here. Merit completely exists in teenagers, and it would be ridiculous to alter the standardized admissions test to help people of different ethnic minorities get in. The entire point of the test is that it is equal for everyone, and whoever gets the highest grades get in.

  • Had black guys engaged in the same prank, it would have been played down because society sees all women as hysterical. Also, there would be questions over why are the (insert race here) guys so interested in annoying her.

  • Unless they are thoroughly--or seemingly--assimilated, Asians count as "people of color." In fact, there is plenty of racism directed at them that Jews can relate to--discrimination for being smart. There was a time when Columbia University (NYC) had a QUOTA FOR JEWS. This is why I despise racists. Even when people are smart, they try to dump on them. It makes you wonder who the "real monkeys" are.

  • In addition, you say that it was how the people in our school was raised? How dare you, I live in Bronx and I am an Asian American. I went to a school with a large amount of African American and Hispanics in my elementary and middle school and the children were relentlessly racist toward me, using derogatory terms such as ching chong and asking me for Chinese food. So there, your statements are based on your own biased and hypocritical way of thinking.

  • You are basing your argument mostly on the fact that only a small percentage of the people in Stuyvesant are African America. However, you do not consider how hard it was for the students who actually get into the school. You are being hypocritical by saying that more African American and Hispanics in the school, giving an advantage to these minorities. Asians are a minority but how come you don't advocate these reforms for them?

  • Racism is just never good

  • @mwtwyman Oh and most students who attend stuyvesnt don't actually live in manhattan. Almost all students live in brooklyn, queens and a few in staten island.

  • @mwtwyman so just cause there "colored" it means the school has to make a special effort to get them to test? Im guessing you werent born in nyc and havent taken the SHSAT. which is the test to get into stuyvesant and other specialized high schools. everyone was offered an equal opportunity to take the test. we were informed by our junior highschool where and when the test will be given. it was up to US to actually go there and take it.

  • Social Darwinism, nuff said

  • I have to say this though, since Racism's inception, it will always be perpetuated..Theres no way that it will die..We can only tolerate it. But it is passed on from generation to generation, like a genetic virus..You'll have a better chance of witnessing the extinguishing of "Aids" in your life time, before blatant racism is abolished, and destroyed..If man can hate himself to the point of suicide, then he would no more tolerate his own brother..Thats just the nature of the "beast." God Bless..
