Time lapse of a flatcar stall fouling a group switch. Of interest is the time delay in halting hump operations, switching the trim engine into position, and clearing the fouling cars. Framing rate is approximately 2 seconds/frame.

  • on your caption when the engine goes and gets the car that you refer to as stalled, it didnt stall, it just didnt tie on. had it stalled (frogged) it would have stopped well short of the other cars. Back to my main point, the caption you said the engine kicks the cars is incorrect, kicking cars is basically another way of humping cars, what the engine did is shove the cars

shove = engine ties on and pushing them back to where they need to go

kick = we release the cars while the engine is moving

  • @XtremeGooch Thank you for the clarification of the 'term of art'. Always good to have someone with expert knowledge teach us on the outside of the industry.

  • Judging by the fact that I see a CSX loco correct the stalled car I looked up the list of CSX hump yards. Now the next part is my educated guess of the CSX hump yard in Hamlet NC but I can't be for certain.

  • @thehighwaypatro Hamlet is correct.

  • where is this?

  • @TheDylanJoyce Sorry for the delay in response, YouTube's 'reply' was broken. Hamlet NC.

  • lol

  • @coyoteatquiznos We were using the trim loco on the right as a platform for an RTK GPS survey of the yard profiles.

The 1 frame every 2 seconds time-lapse sure beats standard 29 fps video in terms of watch-ability. This would have been a 25-30 minute video,,,

  • LOL, seems as though the locomotive at the right realized it wouldn't be able to make it through the fouled switch.

Elapsed speed makes the video look like the work of a hasty model railroader. It's very interesting.

  • "Humping stopped." Just kidding. This was pretty cool.
