As Obama Visits Afghanistan, Tavis Smiley on Rev. Martin Luther King and His Opposition to the Vietnam War

As the President renews his commitment to expand the American military presence in Afghanistan, we turn to a man he is sometimes compared to: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A new special on PBS from TV host and author Tavis Smiley delves into this comparison and looks at a speech that has a particular resonance today with the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: Dr. Kings famous antiwar speech of April 4, 1967 titled Beyond Vietnam.

  • This is why MLK is considered one of the most important freedom fighters in history and Obama seems to simply be a great PR man for maintaining the status quo. Say what everyone wants to hear, and then maintain the status quo.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the great truth tellers, truly compassionate and avoiding the partisanship and diversions.

  • Tavis Smiley has truly grown in my humble estimation because of his courage to publicly take a stand on Dr. King's anti war position. Prior to this I disliked Tavis because of his obvious dislike of Muslims and of President Obama. It can be said that he is taking this position in order to make a powerful attack on Pres Obama. whatever his motivation it took courage, the same ones who hated King will now hate Tavis for helping to bring this back alive.

  • Obama works for the banks. Dr. King worked for the people.

Obama speaks with a serpents tongue, Dr. King spoke with the words of justice for the oppressed.

Obama says one thing but does the opposite, Dr. King did what was in his heart and was killed for this.

    Obama is no MLK.

  • He promised to end the war, not continue it.

    Working as intended.
