Nicholas Humphrey launches a broadside against religious indoctrination, in a lecture that set the stage for Richard Dawkins' attack on religion as "child abuse". This is an illustrated version of the original 1997 Oxford Amnesty Lecture (delivered as one of the Pufendorf Prize Lectures at the University of Lund, 2011).
Excellently reasoned argument. I think that parents will only acknowledge the harm of indoctrinating their children when they are made aware of the influence of their own childhood indoctrination. That, I think, can only be assisted by the public understanding of science. Science needs to be put on the political podium and discussed intelligently. The 'mad scientist' portrayed in popular culture needs to tempered. The true credit we owe to scientific endeavour can only increase it's mass appeal.
