Datjirri #2 is an older brother of Napurrawuy Wunungmurra and is not to be confused with Peter Datjirri #1 who is a noted yidaki craftsman.
This yidaki was made by Datjirri #2 and is something of a rarity as he is not known to be a yidaki craftsman. If he keeps making them like this, we're happy to buy them all!
The acoustics of this F# are tremendously good with lots of character and deep complexity. There's so much to explore in its soundscape that it is difficult to imagine tiring of playing it. Tongued accents hit the sweet spot and is totally satisfying to play and to listen to.
Back pressure is ideal allowing for near effortless play. Vernon raved on about this yidaki when we recorded him playing it... it was his personal favourite and he couldn't get enough of it!
This yidaki is for sale in the iDIDJ Store:

A bit about Vernon Marritjngu... I remember him back in the 1990s as a toddler. Watching him play yidaki these days and observing his general behaviour brings home the realisation that he is no longer a baby but a young man.
As a yidaki player, he has certainly blossomed into a fine musician under the tutelage of his adoptive father Djalu Gurruwiwi. Marritjngu is featured as an 11 year old fledgling on the "Yidaki: The Sound of the Didgeridoo" DVD produced in 2000. He has come a long way since and now plays yirdaki with finesse that both father Djalu, and brother Larry Winiwini, have encouraged.
The DVD "Yidaki: The Sound of the Didgeridoo" can be found in the iDIDJ Store:

Good eh? The stick was pretty amazing though, to give credit to the yirdaki. It was Marritjngu's favourite. I've got more vids of Marritjngu playing other instruments which show how instrument type affects sound output.

Top stuff there Guan! By the way, was that you yelling 'yes' at the end of that? How about a bit of Guan-on-yidaki? Or at least a bit of Guan chatting about Yidaki? It'd be fun for those of us who only know you on the forum! Go on, Guan old bean!
Top notes :)
