In this report South Africa's growing vigilante crisis is thrown into sharp relief when the rape of a black girl is publicly avenged

Some of her attackers live in her street and she now fears for her life. Frustrated that the police will do little to help she approaches the local taxi firm to help her get revenge. "Will you be satisfied and stop crying once we've beaten them?" the firm ask her. At 4am the girl points out her township tormentors to willing vigilantes. They strip the culprits naked, strap them to a lamp post and lash them. The girl herself gives the first stroke. The legacy of apartheid leads South Africans to such violence, when even the police disregarded their own laws. The mob ruled when it black against white. This past has depersonalised and dehumanised. The police stand accused of apathy but often they are frustrated by clever criminals. But unless the police earn people's trust, vigilantism may become the norm.

  • Hell ya we need that in america. Crime would go down quickly.

  • @normalguyhere Actually, all forms of punishment are a form of revenge. Revenge IS the answer. The word revenge literally means the return of punishment for punishment dealt out. Justice and revenge are not exclusive, and if the return punishment (read: revenge) is not strong enough, then the justice was not served, as the criminal will repeat the offense.

"The law" is often too weak, and more punishment must be meted out, whether from the government or the citizens.

  • DID YOU SEE WHAT THE MAN SAD, BRING BACK APARTHEID

  • bring it to the united kingdom its great

  • Final point, please dont kill me because im expressing my beleifs on the matter.

  • To further my first point slavers beat black people because "they deserved it" when the slavers themselves were not entirely innocent. In fact given that the rapists suffered like they did I would pardon those that suffered, and arrest the rest.

  • Whilst im not at all suppuorting their actions, tying them together half naked and beating them does not seem right. I understand that they deserve it but what makes the taxi drivers and the girl any better than the rapists if they perform such actions? Just my opinion dont screw me over on it.
