DMST live at the House of Blues in Cleveland.
I can't stress this enough...buy their merch, go see them live. The new album "You, You're a History in Rust" is phenomenal. Auberge Le Mouton Noir is from "Winter Hymn, Country Hymn, Secret Hymn". Their albums are beyond words (no pun intended).
***warning*** at around 6 mins the bass gets so low that my camera's mic cant pick it up and it gets a little noisy.

  • One of my favorite songs... of all time.

  • thanks heaps for posting this!

I live in Australia and I'm a broke student so I can't go out to see them. Youtube and great people like yourself are my last hope to see them live, I think.

P.S. It sounds kind of cool with the really rumbling bass and the violin distant and echoing in the background.

    thanks again!

  • An amazing piece of music. I'm not sure if this is how it actually sounded live, or if it is the limitations of the recording device, but as usual (with live music), it is either so loud as to be just distortion or else some instrument drowns out the melody of another instrument - the sound is absolutely horrendous compared to the perfect version on the album. This is one of the reasons why I never to go live performances.

  • They are SO under rated. Come on Bieber, I dare you to write, no... wait, can he even spell? Epic!

  • @rootvalue that's only in studio, the same drummer, but tortoise make it live

  • I saw this act in Northampton, Ma and it was a religious experience...mindblowing.

The music was great but what impressed me the most was the comraderie on stage..the way they interacted. Cannot describe but enjoyed the shit out of it!

  • What I love about this song (and DMST) is the utilization of two drummers. It sounds incredible in stereo on their studio albums (with one kit in the right speaker and another in the left). Correct me if I'm wrong (and I may very well be) but I feel like there's a triplet sixteenth note beat on the hi-hats, played with one drummer playing eighth notes and another playing the eighth notes (on the off-beat). I don't notice the sixteenth-note beat played in this live version on Winter Hymn...

  • I know exactly what you mean. It took me so long to appreciate ambient music like this song's intro--where there isn't a blatant rhythm or guiding drum path. The breakthrough (for acceptance was) seeing ambient music performed live. It's often more than just floating noise. When I was younger, I forgot that talent is put into all music; some music is just different than my tastes and harder to take a liking to when it's not as frequented as the rest of one's interests. But this is beauty.

  • I love the mood of this song. I just love the way this band have so much atmosphere in their music.

  • Agreed.

I especially love the extended bit with, what is that--a viola?

    Gorgeous.

  • Gotta love the Outaouais :D

I moved to Vancouver a few months ago and I miss the region dearly. Especially the Black Sheep. :*(

  • yeah the song was recorded there. I live in the area but never went, I might go for Basia Bulat next month.
