@InkyCellist: The strings work really well on my violin. The store I bought them from allowed me to try various brands to compare what worked and didn't.

Does playing the violin have any long term effects on one's hearing as the years pass by?

I think there have been numerous studies on the long term effects of playing instruments, and the decibel exposure musicians have is higher than the safe limit unfortunately. Violin probably has a lesser impact than the brass instruments or the piccolo.
