Our patio has a magnolia that has suffered root pruning from construction of the patio and part of the house. The patio bricks are loose and not in concrete, so the roots do get water, and the roots under the lawn seem strong. But, for two years or so, leaves have dropped at a faster rate than they are replaced by new growth, and the I keep pruning away dead branches. Do I cut back taller branches still further so that the vascular system of the tree is smaller and easier to feed from the root system? Leaf growth lower on the lower branches and truck seems more healthy. Please not harsh remarks, only constructive ideas to make sure our magnolia remains the focus of this patio.
