Listen To Your Heart Chapter 12 (3/5)

Chapter 12

Location & Time: Jonas Kitchen, 12:26 P.M.

Nick's Point of View

Mom asks, "Nick, can you refill the pitcher of orange juice, please?"

I nod my head and grab the empty pitcher. I walk into the kitchen to see a teary Demi and Selena.

They both look at me and Demi starts wiping her tears away. I place the pitcher on the counter and walk over to them.

"Is everything okay?" I asked concernedly. "What happened?" I look at Selena then Demi.

"Nothing... Selena knows though."

Selena places her hand on Demi's arm. "And I want you to know that I'll be here for you. I'll take care of you. I'll stay with you at your apartment so you won't ever have to be alone." She said to her.

"But Sel--" Demi tries to interrupt her but Selena continues talking.

"Or you can stay at my place. You can even bring Romeo, I'm sure Juliet won't mind--"

"Selena, listen. I don't want you to make me your responsibility. I can take care of myself." She states matter-of-factly.

"But Demi," I interrupt. "It's not just you. It's you and the baby. You have to think about what's best for the both of you." I turn to Selena. "I want to help."

Selena and I start making adjustments to take care of Demi, despite her protests.

"Look, Demi. Stress isn't good for the baby, so just let us work this out, okay?" I say to her.

She sighs. "Fine. I'll just go back out to the patio while you guys plan out the next 8 months of my life."

"Oh, you're so funny, Dems." Selena says with sarcasm.

Then I remember I was suppose to bring out the orange juice. "Hold on. Wait a minute."

I quickly refill the pitcher and hand it to Demi.

"Take this out with you, please. And drink plenty of it. It has vitamin C. It'll do you and the baby good."

She starts pretending the pitcher is too heavy for her. "Gee, I don't know if I can handle it, Nick."

I roll my eyes at her. "Just go."

She sticks out her tongue and walks away.

"For someone who's going to have a baby sure acts like one." I said to Selena.

"I heard that!" Demi shouts from the door before exiting.

Selena and I laugh. We both look each other in the eyes. I feel happy with her. But, I have to look away. I could never live with myself if I ever fell for her and something happened to her. I'm already hurting because of Joe, Demi, and the baby. I can't bear anymore hurt.

She smiles at me when I look back at her. Awkwardness came over me. I try to change the subject.

"So, what are we going to do with her?"

Selena sighs and says, "She can be trouble..."

"I heard that too!" Demi yelled at us.

"I guess she didn't leave after all."

Selena and I both laugh again.

I clear my throat and say, "I could take care of her during the weekends?" Kind of questioning what I was saying.

Selena giggles as she says, "Sure." She smiles at me again.

Why does she have to have the cutest smile and her lips look so soft-- No stop it, Nick!

Ugh! What is wrong with me? I feel like running from everything. Anything and everything. I can't deal with a relationship right now.. Or maybe even ever--

"Nick?" Selena asked, awaking me from my thoughts.

"Hmm?" I asked, a little confused.

"Oh, nothing. You zoned out on me a few seconds ago." She said.

"Ohhhh." I said, awkwardly.

Selena taps her foot a few times while looking at her hands.

It wasn't Selena's fault that I'm feeling awkward. It was my fault that I have to keep it this way. I just don't want to lose another person that I deeply love... even if that means pretending I just want to be just friends with Selena.
