@marshhen She didn't use superficial characters to make this movie appeal to the younger set. She used characters that seem like real people, with music that gives the effect of how you might feel had you have been them. It made it sort of equivalent with today to help us really get a feel for what it might have been like. Because of my attraction to this movie I have been to Versailles twice and read three books on Marie Antoinette. i have learned more than my history classes ever taught me.

this is much better than the film unfortunately, it is unfortunate that Copolla couldn't bother to read a few books and maybe bring some complexity the story....the idea that superficial simplistic characters make historical stories appeal to younger people is absolutely insulting.
