SEE: http://www.angelfire.com/ab7/history_doorstep/jollywood.html for details of the John E. Blakeley / Mancunian story 'Hooray for Jollywood'. ------ "The book is a splendid evocation of a golden era of Mancunian and Lancastrian humour a book I could happily read over and over again". (Manchester Evening News). ***** "a must for all movie buffs". (Tameside Reporter). ***** "This book is a 'must-have' for anybody interested in the subject matter contained here. I cannot think of any other work which so comprehensively tells us about this much-missed man and the films he made". (Peter Pollard - George Formby Society).
What a wonderful performance by the young Pat Phoenix, adore her accent;)

I'd like to see more of Powell's stuff (here in the US it's impossible, outside of YouTube. His demeanor on film seems to combine both comic timing and human warmth; I recently heard on the BBC that he was much the same in real life. Thanks for this.

Pat certainly got her moneys-worth from the elocution lessons. Its a pity Sandy Powell didn't make more films - he had a natural presence on the screen. I wrongly assumed he relied on his "Can you see me Mother?" catchphrase for all occasions.
