@mysticnurse Competition can only provide for so much quality, and it will inevitably mean that some will not be able to afford health care. Government provided health care might be crappy, but at least it is some health care.

Hey Robert!
How are you liking this hope and change so far!

Telling the Southern Avenger to vote for Obama would be like telling Jews to vote for Hitler!!!
-
I voted for Obama and I think this was the best argument of why he didn't vote for Obama. He said because he is a Conventional Democrat. Now was that hard. That is a fine argument without ridiculous smears. THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!

"extraordinary claims requires extraordinary evidence" - and ordinary (i.e. repeated thousand times in childhood) claims are to be believed without evidence? Just look at what public schooling is doing for minorities and the poor.
In no other occupation, are the customers blamed for failing to benefit from the service they purchased - that too in large numbers, except in public education. Why do you think that is? No child left behind? Ever see a "No Walmart customer left broke policy?

People have risked their lives on curiousity. As to evalutating strands of curiousity - I must ask Why? Just look at Einstein or Mark Twain, if you need help in deciding what to think about schooling. Look at what they had to say about schooling - and I agree with them.
As for things working in principle and reality - do tell where altruism, subjective(WHAT?) truth have worked. As for ethics and morality, can you teach someone under penalty of rape? If not, how can you fund teaching with tax?

Reason. The clairvoyance that reason and logic can bring you is amazing. Like I have challenged before - show me another service, where one side pays and pays and pays and pays, while the other side suffers literally nothing.
As for reprimanding teachers, did you know that removing a sexually abusive teacher takes 3 years of paid leave time? And even then it is hard to fire him/her? Yes, there are ways to punish public school teachers, in big books and dream land that is.

What is "education" in public schooling is radically different than the enrichment experience of the mind, that used to be called education. Yes, kids would get out and compete - which is precisely why minimum age and minimum wage laws are created. To keep young kids out. A whole lot of economists have already accepted this - but common people have not. Why is that?

try reading scientific literature from 15 different fields, pick 1 paper each at random and read them and then - try to recreate their experiments in the real world!
As a person whose name is on at least a few "peer" reviewed literature, I can claim to know a thing or two about these.

And of course when you do this, you're going to have to reflect the current knowledge to date on these matters, put forth reasons why your way is better, show results/evidence that argue for this, probably have your claims evaluated by others (ie parents, specialists, etc), and other such checks & balances. I mean, really: you're making great claims. What's backing your arguments?? What drives you to think what you do?
with a gun to your head and a bullet as the third option, i say take the bullet... i hear mike reagan is paying for them

I am with SA. I hate calling myself conservative today, mainly because people associate "conservative" with the likes of Bush and the neo-cons.
