FSM - A Parody? Or Religion?

This is pretty crazy, but does perhaps lead to an interesting question....

Here's his/her e-mail:
I got in a discussion a while back with a friend and found out he was a follower of FSM. Got into another discussion later about straight religious belief which his upbringing was Catholic and he was straying away with the FSM/Pastafarianism thing. The weird thing is I think he honestly believes the whole "his noodly appendage" rant and misses the parody/satire (he just got a pirate fish and posted it on facebook with "My first religious ink... it's pretty sweet, I will admit."). Have you noticed anything like this given you are surrounded by many more "out" freethinkers and skeptics?
