This is the story behind musician Sims Ellison.

Sims was the basist in a band named "Pariah" in the early '90s, once hailed as the next Guns N' Roses. After one of his band's concerts, he met then unknown Renee Zellwegger who was a college student at the time. She later moved in with him, and for next couple of years he helped to support her while she went to university.

When Renee started blowing up in films, she permanently moved to California. Despite the move, they still remained a couple. However as time passed, Sims slowly watched her rise to fame (esp after success of Jerry McGuire) while his own band Pariah was soon dropped from their label. Suddenly Sims noticed that Renee was not calling him as much anymore and her visits back to Texas to visit him eventually diminished. Sims assumed the relationship was over, and this was later confirmed by Renee as she amentioned she found someone else and started dating this other person (actor Rory Cochrane).

Sims then entered a state of depression - he realized that he had nothing to live after losing Renee. He felt alone and took it hard when he saw ads on TV for Renee and her handsome new lover's movie. Sims commited suicide in his apartment by shooting himself.

I have his band's only album - "To Mock a Killingbird". The entire album is good, and such a shame that Geffen solely focused on promoting Guns N Roses, instead of new up-and-comers Pariah. Pariah probably would have been big had there been better marketing applied. Anyways, "Junk Mail" is my favorite track off this album. This is for you Sims......

  • Get your facts straight about Sims Ellison before you write anything . you really are not a legit Pariah fan as you provedit with what you wrote in the more info section.

  • I think you need to get ur facts straight about Mr. Ellison. I'm basing my facts on his family's, his band's, and local news reports. What specifically is incorrect about my "more info" section, and what is ur source?

  • One of the reasons I moved to Texas...

  • Was sad when I hear it. But love this album.

  • what a great band pariah was. I once met Sims before a show at Sneakers in san antonio, very nice guy

  • Have the album... it kicks ass... love em'!!!

  • Never knew til now that he commited suicide. DAMN!

As for your more info section, This is certainly not the only band that got passed over for "newer" acts. Guns' N Roses wouldn't have been the reason for the lack of publicity. It more had to do with the rising Seattle scene. Many "new" bands that were on record company rosters had the same fate. Even "famous" bands got screwed...

  • Fantastic Album,,2 Thumbs Up !!!

  • Sims gave me a big hug @ the legendary club, The Back Room when I go back to Austin for the second time to attend ACC. He said he took Music Business Management there. I clearly remember that day and the last day I saw him@ The Steamboat in Jan. '95.

The love for Pariah made me want to go back to Austin.

    They were really really talented!!

I pray for him every night. R.I.P. Sims

  • This made my stomache turn. We still miss you Sims.
