Does anyone know if this is the clicking noise of death or something else? This hard drive isn't very important, but I'd like to repair it if at all possible.

  • @brizabonskee And it doesn't help that while running CHKDSK on it just recently, I had it only plugged in to the enclosure, not technically inside, and as it was running I accidentally shocked my finger on it. That's when CHKDSK starting freezing. Sucks, really. If only we didn't have carpet I'd have my old photos back now.

  • @c0rrupts3ct0r555 It's a WD notebook drive that's about 2 years old... just a typical 5400RPM cheap drive. It had the OS on it in my laptop and the system hung during startup (followed by a click from hard disk). I tried freezing it then, but it didn't work. so I replaced it (thank God for free OS disc) and set it aside before trying CHKDSK.

  • @brizabonskee bad heads or bad media. sometimes i hear freezing helps but thats 50/50 chance. the head is trying to find the position to find the data and resets the heads because its corrupted. many of my hdds has done that when i have swiped a magnet over them or lightly touched the platters.what brand of hdd was it? hope it wasnt a crapstor... ( maxtor ) or deathstar ( deskstar )

  • Uggh. I've got that. I still can't figure mine out. I run CHKDSK on it and it makes that noise continuously when it decides to hang for about 2 hours on one file, then miraculously continue. I know for sure that it's the actuator arm as it clicks against its boundaries and tries to find it's horizontal position on the disk and reposition itself in the right place to find the data. But its reason for doing that.... that's the issue.

  • @KelwingTheDruid This may be a slightly different sound, but when I updated my Motherboard bios one time i heard a similar sound, it turned out I needed to update my hard drives firmware and it fixed the problem.

  • i have this bullshit to , i got my harddrive 2 days and it started ,,, bullshit

  • if you need to get data off of it, try turning it on it's side or flip it upside down, that drive is pretty much dead and should not be used even if the clicking stops by flipping it or lightly banging on it.

  • Dead :P
