Possibly the most moving film there has been if you understand the complications in life that ugliness can bring. You have to give up many aspirations when one considers oneself to be ugly, let alone those who are truly ugly in the sight or opinion of normal society. Life is unfair one is told so accept it and get on with it. Ugliness is a handicap that is not recognised as such and generally is seen as a bit of a joke because it isnt characterised as a handicap or deformity but just a drag.

This is a wonderful movie as an educational tool, because there are so many things it teaches - not least compassion and thought for others. However, there are very distressing scenes which may not be appropriate for under14's perhaps -especially a scene more than halfway through the film where Joseph/John is abused &there is a sexual suggestion with regards to a male character &two women characters who are prostitutes. So I suggest you watch it first before making your decision.
