Tutorial on how to get Wireless Network cards working in Linux mainly focusing on Ubuntu but this guide is still useful for other Distros.
I can't give an answer for specific cards, but this guide helps you with the steps needed to find a Linux driver for your card and then compile it and get it running in your system.

Find what chipset you have: lshw -C network
Google chipset number

Edit source code (as per instructions)
sudo make
sudo make install
Blacklist existing drivers: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Add new driver to list of modules: sudo gedit /etc/modules

Alternatively using Windows Drivers
Download Windows driver from manufacturer
Install ndisgtk
Install Windows driver through ndiswrapper

If you still can't get it to work, then it might be worth buying a new card, Edimax say their cards are compatible with Linux.

Message me if you've got an RT2860STA or RT3090 and I'll email you a copy of the source code and install instructions which work fine on Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04.

  • You know Quids, when you get the time, The issue is when I set it up everything connects ok and shows that it's connected but as soon as I disconnect the Ethernet cable the screen freezes. When I reboot without the ethernet cable, I don't even get to the desktop. The laptop is the Acer Aspire 5516. I'm not sure what's going on because it shows everything is working fine when I go into connections. I've used the terminal to update my card but still the same thing.

    Cheers mate,

    Cheers,

  • @TheKC1ML Seems to be an issue only affecting that specific model mate. It appears to be a problem with the graphics driver, theres a possible solution in this thread.

  • I still can't get my wireless to work because Additional Drivers doesn't open and Ethernet doesn't work either

  • @Ograws I don't know what was up with your one mate, but Im sure its more to do with your ISP rather than the card.

  • @quidsup My internet sucks too but I can watch videos without buffering and in HD for some reason..........

  • @Ograws Can't be all that bad... well at least on speed its not bad.

I have to give Youtube HD1080 vids head start
