Sedimentary facies are groupings of rocks used to highlight the most important features for a research question. Here, I describe the concept of facies and give a couple of examples. You can also see my lecture notes for facies in the second half of this blog posting: http://dawnssedstrat.blogspot.com/2011/01/lecture-5-bedforms-continued-and-fa...

  • Can you use permeability to group Facies?

  • @obesejim Facies = useful groupings of rocks based on their features. If your project is related to something like reservoir properties, permeability would be a very useful characteristic to help define facies. You might define a "high permeability arenite (pure sandstone) facies" versus a "low permeability wacke (sandstone with mud matrix)". It is often good to include the features that cause the variations in permeability in your facies definitions.
