Here is the Apple Newton MessagePad, originally launched by Apple Computer in 1993 (the models seen here are the MessagePad 120 (demoed, running Newton OS 2.0) and 110, both from 1994. So there you have it, the Apple handheld from 15 years before the iPhone, still with full handwriting recognition and fully open to run any 3rd-party Newton application - they can even connect to the internet with the right PCMCIA networking card. And you can replace the battery yourself with standard AA size batteries... ;-)

  • cool i am buying one can i connect it to the computer

  • You can connect it to a pre-USB Mac with an Apple serial cable or to a PC via the old serial port if you have a Newton to serial cable, Apple's Newton Connection Utilities software is used on the PC or Mac to connect to it.

  • @BeigeG3 could you use a serial-USB adaptor, or would i have to use my old Windows 98 machine as a "Interpretor"?

  • I don't know to be honest - I think it would be likely to work better with the real serial port and older hardware and Windows version though.

  • Hello. First of all great video, even music I like.

I wanted to find out hardware information: the Newton 120 runs on batteries (Primary cell) or rechargeable battery such as that of the notebook?

    Thank you!

  • Hiya,

The Newton takes four AA-size batteries, so can take standard disposable ones, rechargeable ones, or there is an Apple-made 4-cell rechargeable pack that fits in the machine and comes with a plug-in charger. They will run off a wall adapter if you don't have any batteries to hand, there is a separate small round backup battery so that it retains your settings when the main batteries are removed.

    Thanks! :-)

It didn't come with an original stylus where do you think I could get one? Can you explain to me how I would go about connecting it to my computer? (windows 7 hp with core i5)
