I've been trying to figure out for the life of me why so many conductors rush through this movement as if they're trying to get it over with and get onto the third movement. It's refreshing to see a conductor give this piece the care it deserves. Hats off to Giulini (and Latshaw - look up his interpretation - very similar to this one) for directing the orchestra to give this movement the gravity it deserves.

@DancrGrl245 just outta curiosity, what instrument do you play
-
@Witchkingx5 its supposed to be slow...i will agree..it is a little too slow....but it add dramatic emphasis to the piece...makes it more suspenseful...and obviously dramatic...
if you want a slightly faster version...listen to this one ( watch?v=4uOxOgm5jQ4 ) ...it isnt too fast or too slow imho...you'll probably like it the most

it is too slow...Beethoven was an extremely emotional man, he did nothing that slow. Its the "dance symphony," not a requiem!

@Gawaine687 I think exactly as you

@Witchkingx5 go watch Beethoven's 7th symphony 2nd Movement Allegretto. There are several versions of this song. Go find the one you like instead of criticizing a version that some prefer.

it's too slow...

the first time i heard this was when i sight-read it in orchestra this morning. Having never heard it before, I fell in love.

@Gawaine687 there are sooo many recordings of this that take it way too fast...this is such a solemn piece, to play it any faster than it's done here is a total travesty imo
This is unquestionably my favorite version of this piece. The orchestra is clean and concise, and Giulini takes it at a proper pace; it isnt too fast so he lets the sound and emotion breathe and gradually build. Many thanks for posting!!!!
