MaximsNewsNetwork 16 February 2010 - UNTV: United Nations Human Rights Council, Geneva - Iran told the UN Human Rights Council that Iranian society is a "successful model of brotherly and amicable coexistence", making no reference to the protests by the opposition to the disputed elections last June.

In his speech to the 47 member council meeting to review Iran's human rights record on yesterday (Monday 15 February), one of its top officials, Mohammad Javad Larijani outlined the Islamic Republic's "achievements" in civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

He condemned sanctions by certain western countries for what he called "purely political reasons" and denounced their use of human rights as a "political tool".

It is the first time since the UN Human Rights Council set up a regular review of all countries human rights record, that Iran has been called to account. 60 countries spoke during the morning session. The most outspoken were western countries such as the United States that expressed deep concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in the past 8 months.

They called for visits by UN human rights experts, with the UK requesting that the UN Secretary General investigate the post election violence and independently assess the human rights situation.

Developing countries, notably Islamic countries, made no reference to the opposition protests, congratulating Iran on its high standards of economic, social and cultural rights.

In response to concerns about discrimination, arrest and torture of members of the Bahaai minority community, the Iranian delegation stressed that no Bahaai was prosecuted because of his human rights activities. ................................................................................­....
