Ive always said, If you want to hear Phil Spectors talent, listen to the original 45 (what the music was meant for), even today when I listen to my old 45's I use the mono switch. So many songs from that era lost their magic when rematered. Remember when CD's first came out and they tried to sell us those remastered oldies, boy what a joke. I guess my problem is that, the sound was engrained in my mind as a kid and you can't fool my memory. :-)

When Phil Spector produced his "great" sounds in the early 60's, he knew who would be listening to it. The teenagers of the day didn't have stereo players, if you had anything it was a small player that played only 45's (most 45's were mono), and our cars only had AM radios, he knew how to make that great sound come out of small speakers on out transistor radios. You could spend millions on sound equipment and not make his music sound any better.
Phil may have been crazy but he was not stupid.

@PJDooWop Oh, I meant that the song itself should be remastered; I didn't know it already had been. I ought to download it . . .

Nice to hear a slightly different version of this epic track...I absolutely love Barbara Alston's vocal...wish she'd done more tbh.
Fabulous! Goodness, I love doo-wop :) I'm also into rock n' roll (the REAL deal, no painful hard rock), country, folk & folk-rock, psychadelic rock, some early experimental/avant garde stuff, soul . . . pretty much any old 60's pop music, some from the 50's/70's. I'm nearly 15 and seriously want to bring this stuff back, so I'm starting a group. Stuff like this is my inspiration. Odd problem with the shifting stereo sound, I'm wearing headphones so I certainly noticed. Ought to be remastered...

I don't think they'd remaster this copy, lol. The song has been remastered and issued on cd. Most copies of this record play in mono. This is just a weird pressing

Totally amazing.

Agreed

I agree, PJ. This also may be a case of a mono master tape with issues being cut on a stereo machine. That would explain the channel flutter and the balance problem.

Good point.. Going back to your original theory, if this were a mono dub that was a few generations back from the master, that could be part of the issue. The vintage compressors that were used in the mastering would have softened everything causing the interesting effect we have now.
