These haunting tones dogged us through the cloud forests of Panama and Costa Rica - but we could never see the buggers - is it a bell bird?

  • Well it was 25 years ago and we did get good views of the female (we found the male when we saw his tail sticking out of the nest hole). We went again a few years ago and had good views of a pair. All these sightings were near Volcan Baru, at Bajo Grande, just beyond Cerro Punta. It was all seriously wild in 1986!

  • @infopt2000 thanks - yes, a birder colleague I.Ded it for me - fantastic sound. Sucks about missing the Quetzal! (we saw one near Volcan Baru in Panama).

  • Sounds like Andean Solitaire - I agree a very characteristic sound of the high forests. The first time I went looking for Quetzals I got distracted by one and missed the male Quetzal flying off over my head!
