Spectacular Landmark Victorian!

This Queen Anne was built in 1891 on an enormous lot along with its historic carriage house. Built from then plentiful redwoods, its construction is graced with exquisite Eastlake details. The current owners have transformed the interior with fervor and Victorian spirit. The interior of the house has retained a large percentage of its original redwood floors and trim. Floors are all plank redwood with amazing beauty. Where new wood was installed, tedious search resulted in matching wood almost indiscernible from the original. Almost all of the trim is either original wood from the attic used to make wainscot in the downstairs water closet and to replace floor planks where repair was needed. The old floors have been lovely brought to life.

All the rooms were renovated with paint colors taken from the turn of the century paint samples. Bradbury & Bradbury wallpaper is used throughout the house. It is hand-painted with silk screen and most have the traditional gold accents which were considered important to magnify the dim gas lamps there would have initially used. The paper has proved to be as practical as it is beautiful.

The exquisite garden boasts nearly twenty palm trees and just as many bearing fruit trees. The previous owner was an avid gardener connected to UCSC Arboretum. She collected plants from all over the world including many rare palms and special plants from Australia and New Zealand.
Sit in the lovely old-fashioned porch and enjoy your own private garden!

  • My grandfather owned the home before your Mother purchased it. Ed & Louise Perkins were my grandparents and restored the carriage house to a carriage house. We just took my mom by there yesterday to see it! We have lots of wonderful memories from visiting them during the summer time (we lived in Palo Alto). Nice to hear your mom lived there for 30 years! My grandparents spent all of their time renovating it and furnishing it with antiques!

  • My mother owned this house for 30 years. My father bought it in 1974 for $77,000. The exotic nature of the garden is due to my mom having been president of the UCSC arboretum. In the dining room where the two buffets are standing (on the right) used to be a fireplace. The chimney crumbled in the 89 earthquake and was removed. The ceiling in the front entry had more decorative trim on it, but was also lost in the earthquake....
