MARCO POLO: THE CHINA MYSTERY REVEALED
Did Marco Polo Really Make the Journey to China?
Was he the Worlds Greatest Overland Explorer or the Biggest Liar?

Perhaps no land journey in human history is more famous than Marco Polos legendary 24-year trek across Asia. But was it all just a big lie? As described in his 1299 book, The Description of the World, the peripatetic Venetian merchant encountered such wonders as the singing sand dunes of Dunhuang, China, mountains of salt in present-day Afghanistan, and the glories of the Mongol court of Kublai Khan. Generations of Europeans were spellbound by Polos account, yet in recent years some scholars have questioned its authenticity.

For an extensive three part series in National Geographic, veteran photographer Michael Yamashita put the famed Venetians reputation to the ultimate test using Polos own book as his travel guide for a journey in the celebrated explorers footsteps.

Yamashita retraced Polos route across ten countries, from Venice through restricted areas in Iraq and war zones in Afghanistan, over the old Silk Road into China and back again by way of Southeast Asia and India. Along the way he encountered many landmarks and peoples documented in Polos book, deepening his conviction that Polos account is indeed authentic. Yamashita shares dazzling images and fascinating stories from his own journey to the East, while making a strong, personal case for the veracity of the reports of his 13th-century predecessor. Yamashitas search for Marco Polo led to this series of documentary films that first aired on the National Geographic Channel Asia.

Three 30-minute episodes, shot on 16 mm film. Initial airing: March 2004, National Geographic Channel Asia.

Asian TV Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Music Score

  • mongolian empire was the biggest

  • Mongols fought against established empires and gained land, while the British mostly 'fought' a bunch of half-naked barefoot Aborigines, and Indians.

  • The British Empire was BIGGER and actually lastest longer. The Mongol Empire only lasted for 160 years and only covered 22% of the worlds surface, The British empire lasted for over 300 years and covered 27% at it's biggest, although almost a third of the world was once a part of it.

  • Whether it is liked or not the british empire was just that little bit larger then the Mongol empire. And To the fool making a dig saying "how long did your faggot colony last" well look at new Zealand, Canada, australia, USA, along with many other smaller colonies, all great countries surviving exceptionally well.

  • he mongols conquered china which was the most advance civilization at that time. marking the Mongol invasion of Europe, during which the Mongols attacked the medieval powers of Poland, Kiev, Hungary, and damn Russians pays tribute to mongol khan for 2 and a half century. the mongols defeated the arabs/muslims in a very short period whereas the so called crusaders unable to do for centuries. In short the mongols conquered highly civilized powerful nations while the brits beat half naked tribes

  • @IndianArcher94 1st off you are american, american/samoa. secondly, rather than argue with me why not google/wikipedia what the biggest empire of all time was. it comes up britain everytime. dont listen to the kids online. or yourself for that matter. i study at balliol college and im tellin you the british empire was by far the biggest. alot bigger than all other empires before it

  • @british123able really, honestly that's not true. I am actually studying history in University, and i am english, so no bias in favour of the mongols, but the English Empire was MORE STRETCHED OUT (as in they had more diverse places), but not bigger (as in the superficy of the land) and the number of people who were subdued by the mongols was far superior. On a personal level, i also think that the mongol empire was more impressive; as they conquered with skill, no technology involved !
