Foreign leaders say the ultimate goal in Afghanistan is to improve the lives of ordinary people. For more than forty thousand children forced to survive by taking up work in Kabul, there's little evidence of anything actually improving. Al Jazeera's Hamish MacDonald has been meeting some of the children who sift through the capital's rubbish for a living.
It could be worse.

Thanks for acknowledging the history. I wish you would reconsider our part in basically opening the door for the Taliban (who you claim it is our only job to now "kill") -that active part actually gives us the responsibility to soften the damage we have caused in whatever ways we can-such as improving their non-drug economy and helping them improve their small d democratic governance to include schooling for all. The best way for a society to improve itself is to make sure women can read.

This scene is all to popular around the world. I've seen it in the Caribbean's, Africa, China, etc... Unfortunatly it's not a rare Phenomena... We cannot allow this to go on, they learn how to live poorly and it's hard to learn new things after a certain age.

These kids would still be doing this weather the US went to Afganistan or not

Yeah the U.S. funded the Afghans during that time but it was all done indirectly so the Soviets wouldn't be able to link the Afghan resistance to the U.S. We gave PAKISTAN millions of dollars to arm the Afghans and train them. THEY were the ones who trained them not us. You're right we shouldn't have dropped the ball. Either way though people who say that we are responsible for the condition of these child workers are just retarded. That's their own governments job. Ours is to kill Taliban.

Yes, "dropping the ball" was where everything went wrong. That and trusting Zia ul Haq too much.
