@CM99501 Meh. it could be argued it was also to give the bored youth of the age something to do so they'd stop ravaging Europe, and stop the devolving of land. And it could be argued as a way of stopping the famine in Europe; when the first crusade was preached, one of the major points was the image of a fertile land begging to be taken, and it meant that a lot of the nobles who'd been otherwise engaged killing each other in Europe did something else.

@CM99501 Don't forget Indulgences. You could pay a priest so he could write a document "proving" you had been absolved of sins. The indulgences were free of charge if you took up the Crusade.

The reason why the crusades began was because of the pope being greedy and the church wanting more money.

Back in that time the church was all about money. You even had to pay to get your baby babtised. The pope saw Jerusalem as money in his eyes.
