This may sound simple, but here is a feature most may not use because they are unaware of it. Simply open your keyboard, slide open the application tray on your Android device and start typing to narrow down the results. This trick will work on all versions of Android without additional programs.
The search is based of of the first letter in each word. Like Gmail; type g then m. If you type m first only applications with the words starting with m will apear. The search also picks up the second word if the applications like MP3 in the name Amazon MP3. Now give it a shot.

awesome tip! On my Droid (perhaps in others as well) it not only finds applications, it also finds contacts.

I have the latest stable Cyanogen rom and this does not work. Anybody else have a problem with this?
