In the past, provincial resource ministries undertook consultation obligations primarily on a single-ministry basis and with individual First Nation bands. But in 2007, three provincial resource ministries and six coastal First Nations entered into a pilot agreement where consultation was streamlined into one process. The pilot was so successful that a more comprehensive agreement the Nanwakolas Strategic Engagement Agreement (SEA) was approved by Cabinet in 2009. This SEA significantly reduces the consultation burden for both the Province and participating First Nations.
