British United ATL-98 Carvair at Coventry Airport. Cross-channel Car ferry, loading Mk2 Jaguar and refuelling before take-off. This was shot on 8mm cine film at the end of the 1968 season.
I grew up in the sixties near Rotterdam airport and the Carvair is such familiar sight to me. In the summer, when the wind was blowing from a particular direction, our house was under the flight-path when they were approaching for landing and, as a young lad, I loved the base sound of those four big radials...
We flew with our car from Coventry airport to France in 1965 in a Bristl Freighter (s smaller version of the Carvair) We were given boiled sweets, helped with the lack of a pressurised cabin. The holiday was going to be for two weeks, but it only lasted two days as Dad didn't like or get on with the French. We flew back to Southend in a Carvair and had a "proper" holiday in Devon instead! I remember dad saying the fare for 4 of us and the car was £120 (was a lot then)
My Dad (Captain 'Mike' Oliver Bussey) flew Carvairs and Bristol freighters from Southend during this period (maybe they knew one another). You may find these movies interesting.Shot,of course,on 8mm wind up camera by my Dad: Search for: A Pilot's Life. Part 2/2. and A Pilot's Life. Part 1/2. Hope you enjoy.
I took my first ever aeroplane flight from Coventry to Calais with our VW variant on the car deck of a Carvair in 1965. This is absolutely brilliant. I have some std8 footage and wiill get it posted on here. Thanks craviola.
