Well, there was a more in depth story in the AES Version (or Virtual Console) compared to The MVS Version (or SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1) which hardly had any story. Magician Lord was actually decent. It was hard, but that is what makes a good game, but when compared to Battletoads, it's childsplay. The Guy that taunted you throughout this game was suppposed to return in Magician Lord 2; however, in 1995, the sequel suffered through Development Hell, and never saw the light of day again.

it's strange to see someone who has a channel dedicated to gaming play a classic and almost cliche'd sidescroller and be baffled at the most common 2d video game tropes that being said this game is my favourite, for many reasons and your initial reactions are probably the same I had when I first played it. also yes this game is horribly anticlimactic, and there IS some kind of intro at the beginning but just like most games of its time you have to do nothing and time will trigger the intro
