Cheek-Spearing and Skin-Hooking Festival

At the Thaipusam Festival in Malaysia Hindus smash thousands of coconuts whilst some skewer their cheeks with spears. Others have their entire backs embedded with steel hooks attached to bells or nylon cables which they pull along. The spectacle in Penang attracts tourists from all around the world each year. The devotees claim to feel no pain and no blood is drawn.
