Baby chick from a Trader Joe's egg

As a science project my kids tried hatching grocery store eggs. It can be done, the box just has to be marked fertile. 8 out of 12 began development, 1 hatched. Here is a 5 day old baby chick hatched out of a grocery store fertile egg from Trader Joes. His name is Joey.

what do you do with the chickens when youre done with the project?

We kept her in our backyard coop, along with the rest of our city chickens, for about a year and a half. Eventually, she went to live, along with two of her flock mates (including the other chick in the video who was her best friend,) with a family in Burbank.

We still keep lots of chickens. Right now our flock is mostly bantam cochins and an Easter Egger.

what do you feed the chicks right when they hatch

We feed them organic chick starter. It is sold by the bag at feed stores.

Hey, that means they're at least not battery cage hens. (They gotta be out in the open & mixing with the roosters to have fertilised eggs!)
