A new study has revealed some surprising information about same-sex couples living in Illinois. The Williams Institute at UCLA profiled gay and lesbian partners living all over the country. There are more than 30-thousand same-sex couples here in Illinois. But that's not the only eye-opening statistic found in the study.
The study finds more male couples than female couples... 53-percent versus 47-percent. The average age of a same-sex couple is 40, about seven years younger than married individuals.
Same-sex couples also have a strong impact on the state economy. 78-percent of same-sex couples are employed, compared to 67-percent of married people. And lesbian couples earn nearly 8-thousand dollars more than married women. Gay and lesbian couples are also more likely to have a college degree.
Some of the most interesting statistics from the study fall under raising children. Approximately 22-percent of same-sex couples are raising children in Illinois, and nearly 3-percent of the states adopted children live with a gay or lesbian parent.
The study also found, on average, that same-sex couples have 2-children in the household.
