This sermon is brilliant, humane and profoundly Christian, and Reverend Wright is wrongly maligned for it. I wish President Obama had stood up for him at the time this was getting shouted about three years ago. I had been troubled by the last verses of Psalm 137 for many years, and was deeply moved by what Reverend Wright had to say. Thank you for posting this--I never would have been able to listen to it otherwise.
@leesec1 well in that case then friend are you willing to put yourself in our shoes for one day? in fact look up on you tube the tyra banks show... where she had an idea on doing some social experiments... where she ended up puttin herself (in disguise) in the common everyday americans shoes to see what happens and how everyone else reacted to the characters that she potrayed...which was in fact the everyday common american, exposing how fucked up everyone is in this country...uhhhmerica.
@raptorkiller2k5 You need only look to yourself, self victimization is what's killing people like you. Stop making excuses for bad behavior and for a lack of self respect. I tell you the truth I have never seen so many people celebrate their own demise. Ya need to only look at you. Franny and freddy remember those 2 banking institutions that had to be bailed out? Please tell me why? Wasn't it because they were giving out loans to minorities that did not pay their loans? I think so.
@leesec1. The demand was driven by whites, though. It's akin to me holding down your sister and then I sign a contract, where I sell her virginity (and life) to this cat, Ignorant Fuck. Do I have to provide more graphic examples? Is the ignorant fuck, i.e. white buyers, not guilty as well?
This is so annoying as hell, because this shit is still occurring now. Don't get surprised that WTC was taken down. That's what happens when America and West kills innocents in the third world.
@leesec1. Yawn. I love your anecdotal evidence. We don't even know you. On the other hand, blacks being incarcerated, denied mortgages, and mistreated in all spheres of socio-economic is backed by countless academic sources. One just has to look at papers regarding the prison crisis. The under representation of blacks in politics in the liberal north. I don't even have to start about the third world. This "excuses" notion is so annoying, because I'd start looking at you.
@10ruthie. That's pretty obvious considering over a million young black men are in the prison system. These black men are largely incarcerated due to petty drug possession (despite being the minority of drug users). In addition, these men are usually poor.
What does that mean? The grants allocated to poor, by census income stats, doesn't reach black communities, but well off rural areas where prison complexes are based. White people, in return, significant over represent on the welfare line.
Jeremiah Wright served this country as a Marine in the military. I would say that qualifies as patriotism. Critiquing your country's actions honestly does not make you anti-American. It's the MOST American thing you can do. If you don't agree with him, okay. But, doesn't he have a right to his opinion and viewpoint?
Let's just say you are correct in all that you say about black people being oppressive to each other. So what? What does that have to do with the fact that America codied subhuman and inhumane treatment to slaves and descendents of slaves? Moral equivalence is a false argument and does not negate responsibility. So, other people's involvement in triangular trade negates America's involvement? That's illogical.
CJay, Aren't whites always being accused of being the bad people of the earth? It's time to tell all of history not just "snippets" I'm definitely not a racist nor do I believe any people should blame a whole other race for all of their problems. My comments were to show that there are 2 sides to every coin, I know several Black attorneys, doctors, business owners, many succeed and don't find excuses not to work hard and make a good life!! I'm tired of hearing whitey oppresses us!!!!
