Davis is the most bicycle conscious community in the nation. Statistics shows that 17 percent commute to work or school by bikes. So, it would only make sense for the California Bicycle Museum to be located here. The core holdings are contained in the Pierce Miller collection, owned by the University of California. It spans 100 years of bicycle evolution between 1820 and the early 20th century. (UC Davis NewsWatch 2009)
The first safety bicycles were the best from about 1890 to 1900, solid tyres so no puncture misery. Tough sturdy wheels with thick spokes and leaf spring suspension under the seat so despite solid tyres still a reasonably comfortable ride. And built so strong they would last for decades! Todays flimsy bikes are a constant nightmare of punctures, parts failure and they almost completely wear out after a couple of years. I have never had a bought new bike last me more than about two years!
