On May 12th, IAVA Legislative Associate Tom Tarantino participated in this live panel discussion about the implications of the deadly shooting at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, reflecting on his own experience dealing with combat stress as a platoon leader and what the military can do to help junior officers recognize signs of crisis.
This is NOT a "mental health" injury! This is a STRESS injury that results in impairment to the stress response that causes a metabolic disruption and if not treated properly... it results in an Acquired Brain Injury. This is also the reason that Vets have such high rates of a growing number of chronic and life-threatening health conditions that later appear in people who have been diagnosed with 'PTSD'. Tom Tarantino can call this a "mental health" issue until his blue in the face! It's a TBI!
