Iona was formed during the late eighties and released their self-titled debut album in 1990. The band covers a number of styles including Celtic, progressive rock and even jazz and Christian elements.

All the bands albums have received critical acclaim, as have the bands live performances over the years. The mainstays of the band are Dave Bainbridge, Joanne Hogg and David Fitzgerald and former Kajagoogoo bassist Nick Beggs was a one-time member although there have also been some high profile guests perform with the band on their albums over the years including King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. The band are these days also joined by respected multi instrumentalist Troy Donockley. Inspiration is often an elusive quality which, once it ignites the imagination, can bring forth music and words which can deeply touch the soul. Journey with the original members of the band Iona as they visit the place which so inspired the band's formation - the Scottish Isle of Iona. Filmed in 1990 and now available for the first time on DVD, this unique documentary shows the band in its very earliest days, soon after the release of their first self-titled album, in conversation and rehearsing ideas for their follow up album 'The Book of Kells'.

Combining atmospheric landscape footage from the islands of Mull and Iona and rare concert footage of one of the bands first ever concerts, this is a unique visual document for all those who's lives have been or have yet to be touched by the music of Iona.

Music on this DVD taken from Iona's debut album 'Iona' - originally released in 1990, now once again available, featuring 8 tracks reworked and remixed and the whole album stunningly remastered.

  • "The band covers a number of styles including Celtic, progressive rock and even jazz and Christian elements." Even Christian elements? That's putting mildly. I don't think you can understand this band unless you realize that the isle of Iona is an extremely important place in Celtic Christianity. And you can't fully understand the song unless you realize that the wild goose is the Celtic symbol for the Holy Spirit. " I say a prayer that the wild goose shall come to me."

  • Iona is a Christian band. According to tradition, the wild goose is an Irish symbol for the Holy Spirity

  • I hate intros.

  • My name is Iona :)

  • I just absolutely love this group. Quite a few years back during the period in my life when I made an attempt to follow Christ, I discovered Iona. I collected several styles of contemporary Christian music then but none has made an impact on me and stayed with me like the contemplative and inspirational sound of Iona. I had since at times reverted to my old way of godless living, but I could never at any time get rid of my Iona music.

  • lovely tune

  • @dhavhe84 If you were to suddenly die, do you know where you'd go? If you say yes, how do you know? If you say no, you can know where you'd go. Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life" (John 6:47). Do you believe Jesus is the Messiah; God come in the flesh?

  • regardless of the Christianity, their job is amazing no matter if you are Christian or not their music is so envolving and their sound is so special

this band deserves to be more popular, if you like good music you should listen to their albums, a perfect mix of rock+jazz+celtic music simply amazing

    btw i'm not christian =)

  • I love Iona as well as Loreena McKennit, Enya, Blackmore's Night, Kate Bush and several others.

  • Here I stand, looking out to sea Where a thousand souls have prayed And a thousand lives were laid on the sand Were laid on the sand Years have passed, since they have died And The Word shall last And the Wild Goose shall fly Shall fly Here I stand, looking out to sea And I say a prayer That the Wild Goose will come to me That the Wild Goose will come to me
  • Soul shuddering.

  • Its not about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not referred to in the plural form, when she sings about the wild goose, they left and died.It refers to the Irish who left to fight in other countries war after the English destroy the Irish royal system, they were called the Wild Geese. I am Irish,Born Again Christian who lives in Ireland.Iona is famous,St Columba founded an order there of monks.Famous for the Book of Kells and the Viking raids that destroyed the order.
