When filming a lighting storm yesterday (July 15th)I was looking the other way when a bolt of lightning stuck what appears to be the edge of my property. Watch at 34 seconds into the video.

  • that video is no fake but i can at least tell you as a severe weather expert it was not actually a bolt that struck the ground that was what you call a step leader that never made it back up to the cloud the actuall brilliant flasshes you seen after that was the actual bolt overhead above the house .

  • that you witnessed was the ghost bolt.

more often called the ghosting effect. thats why the thunder was so delayed.

  • lightning hit my driveway one time and i almost shit my pants lol, my ears were ringing for half an hour. i love storms

  • thats amazing

  • Lol man you got that right.

  • The strike was close, but it didn't hit the property. That flash is an optical illusion caused by the reflection of the bolt in the camera's lens. The sound also wasn't instantaneous like dwarfer777 calculated.

  • its not a fake but merly a reflection of the lightning from the lens, i calculate the bolt was 4400ft (1466yds)

  • If it actually struck in the front yard, the sound of the thunder wouldn't be delayed.

  • a positive leader comes from the ground in an attempt to make contact with the main negative leader from the cloud. The flash at 0:35 is a light reflect in the glass of the camera. It is very common and you can see it in alot of lightning videos. Also the FPS on this camera is not fast enough to catch the full bolt

  • It is not a fake, but it surely wasn`t so close or else thunder wave would`ve knocked you down in a milisecond. It is the camera`s lens to put blaim on.
