Ukraine isn't really a country in the opinions of most Slav's, other than Ukrainians of course. Most will characterize it as a buffer-state created from old Polish lands to protect Russia from invasions from the west. The ethnic groups themselves are partially Slavic, mixed with the pesky Cossack raiders. Their language is clearly a hybrid of Polish and Russian, and they have been used by Russia as sort of second-class citizens ever since they signed their country over to Moscow for protection.

ummm, no, poland invaded many countries such as ukraine,lithuania, croatia etc etc and annexed them. however those countries peoples were all given the same freedom as poles, and seen equally etc etc, in the 17th century, poland was the biggest power in europe, it wasnt untill germany,russia and the baltic states all ganged up that poland was defeated that it all came undone.
