Last night, I brought a visitor from India to Deep Ellum, making it his first stop on his first time in Dallas. He had no knowledge of what Deep Ellum is or had been. He loved it. We sat in on some old blues vets jamming at the Bone. A sparse but earnest Tuesday night crowd. The Freedman's Town of my childhood that once embraced and fed Deep Ellum is gone, erased, never to rise there again, but the urban texture and potential of Deep Ellum is largely intact. Let's feed and protect that.

i came to deep ellum a little bit late in the game...back in 1993. it's not the way it was back then. but what is? frankly all the naysaying is making me sick. the ellum i love is still vibrant. it might not have thousands packing it every weekend but i've seen some fantastic shows there in the last few years. not to mention the way the community comes together. look no further than the frankie 45 memorial for evidence of that. deep ellum is strong and will out last you and me.

Lots of good times in Deep Ellum. We would drive into Dallas, hit Bill's Records & Tapes to pick up some bootlegs. Head to Deep Ellum to catch a show at The Orbit Room, Galaxy Club, Trees, Bomb Factory or Deep Ellum Live. Stop by Insomnia or Deep Java for some caffeine and then head back home. It's a shame what Deep Ellum has become now.

Teenage Symphony are one of my all time favorite groups to come out of DFW! I wish they were still around...

I miss insomnia, my slam poetry at club clearview and cheap beers at loose change. Trees and gypsy tea room gone and who is to blame? Is a fight and lawsuit to blame, I want my deep ellum back which is futile and optimistic as a blind lemon counting tears in the rain...

Don't you mean hip town
A little update, the new Dart Green Line Station opened in September 2009. I went to the opening and the ensuing rainy celebration. The new art work where the bridge was is awesome and modern. The artwork on the Gypsy Building is up to date and current. I was weird but, I'm glad everything for the most part is still there with no sign of any major changes. So that is sort of good news, for now.

I spoke to a person who claimed to have knowledge of the Dallas club scene and he blamed the current situation on the hip-hop (god that term feels out dated) clubs which have replaced many of the long established locales. The person I spoke with laid blame on the owners of theses properties, saying they were more interested in bringing in a large crowd for a short period of time, and then liquidating the property or changing the theme of the establishment once profits fell.

sadly this video is a bit out of date. There is a lot of hope for the new changes. There still a few businesses holding strong. The Door moved into the old Gypsy Building. That's kind of sad to think about it, but at least there is still business to be had. There is a campaign for new art to replace the buried bridge murals, but you know it'll never be quite the same.
