"Barrel Racer is a great song and well done. It captures the passion and romantic image rodeo girls possess." (Laurie Tietjen)

It has been said that Howard Lips has the deliverance of Merle Haggard, the soul of Elvis Presley and the conviction of Neil Diamond.

A native of Mississippi, this veteran artist says it was his grandmother's love of gospel music, his grandfather's love for country and blues music, and his daddy's love of jazz and pop that set his musical interests. Early in life, Howard Lips was immersed in classical training first on the violin and then on the piano before rock and roll spoiled his desire for a classical career. A young man named Elvis Presley from Tupelo, MS, burst on the scene, changing Howard and the world. Now hooked on this new sound, he became passionately obsessed with learning tunes of the day on the piano instead of practicing classical disciplines. As popular music changed, Howard learned the latest hits and played the coffee house circuit, eventually finding his way to California and Doug Weston's Troubadour in Hollywood. It was this ironic twist of fate that put his thoughts on Nashville. While working at the Troubadour, he discovered that the former members of Buffalo Springfield were huge George Jones fans. The seed was planted and eventually he found his way to Music City.

In Nashville, the Mississippi country-rocker was introduced to Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton at the height of their recording career. He learned the publishing and music production business with Porter Wagoner and multi-Grammy winning engineer Tom Pick. In 2000, Lips was awarded Certified Gold and Multi-platinum RIAA awards to commemorate his contribution to sales in excess of 18 million copies of the Airways CD and cassette "Headin' Home" by The Platters. Howard's youth was spent on his grandpa's farm located in Forrest County, just outside the Hattiesburg, MS, city limits. His maternal grandpa loved country and popular music and he heard Slim Harpo sing "Raining In My Heart" for the first time while riding in his grandpa's pickup truck. That primitive basic root music became the foundation of Howard's music. Howard's latest album, Barrel Racer, was produced by Tom Pick (8-time Grammy winner) and Harrison Tyner. Pick wrote, "Howard's unique style of singing filled a void in country music. Howard's voice was a natural to bring out the soul in a stream of songs we wrote together." Tyner wrote: "When first introduced to Howard's singing, I could not get enough. Over and over I've listened to the songs on this album and even now I can't stop coming back for more. I'm thrilled to have been a small part of this production and will always be grateful to Tom Pick for introducing me to the unique, one-of-a-kind songwriting/singing talents, style and abilities of Howard Lips. Adonda Records is proud to release Howard's album and we hope for more in the future."

The song on this slideshow is the title song from the Howard Lips album, BARREL RACER, available on CDbaby.com for purchase and/or download.
