@jerryaltman Yep, I remember that noise in Star Trek too, mostly from the floating Nomad space probe in "The Changeling" (second season), but it was used in many episodes. Good ear mate. Lots of shows use sounds from old movies/TV shows. It saves them money by paying a small license fee instead of creating new sounds.
I saw this cg face on a film made by university of Utah in fact Ed catmul do that modeling but Henry Gouraud as also responsible of the first modeling cg human face with is Algorythm name "lissage" in french most know at Gouraud Shading, there was also some good people like Phong and Blinn work on that kind of reasearch.

Those 3D graphics were actually made in 1972, by Ed Catmull and Loren Carpenter, now known as Pixar! FACT!
