One of the things I want to show you guys is an example of 3-D mapping. You can see what we have done is created a 3-D map of the heart that we are going to do the ablation in. So, we're going to take the map and move the direction, please. You can see the little catheter with the white dot. That's actually my ablation catheter that's in the heart now and this patient that's going to be operated on. And you see, if I take it, I can move it. See how it moves? I don't need x-ray in order to see it and I can actually track where I want to go and where I've been actually do surgery on this patient or do whatever I need to do without actually x-raying the heart and actually know what I have done. So, I can actually do 3-dimensional surgery on this patient's heart: all through the groin. All without opening the chest. While the patient is likely going to go home tomorrow, and hopefully will be fixed of his a-fib when we are done.

So, this is an ablation we are doing and you can see these red dots here. These are areas of the heart that we're attempting to purposely eliminate, but these are the areas that can cause atrial fibrillation. We're doing this by heating the catheter inside the heart and delivering electrical current through the catheter. The surface of the tissue underneath the catheter and the red dots show us not only the areas we are at, but also the same areas we have been so we don't have to cover the same ground twice. This really allows us to do something that would have attempted impossible to do 10 years ago. Now with this technology, this sort of GPS system to the heart, we can now do this type of surgery.

The ablation procedure, as we are doing this, you can see, there's a whole bunch of data which I put on the screen which I am monitoring and she is monitoring, which tells me the conditions of the tissue underneath the catheter and also tells me about the conditions of the catheter as we delivery energy to this patient's heart.

Even just about 10 years ago, in order to do this type of surgery, where you try to actually eliminate abnormal parts of the heart that are causing the arrhythmia, in order to do it, you had to open the chest, find those parts, and actually cut them out with a scalpel. Now, all this can be done minimally invasively with just a couple small punctures in the patient's groin with the catheter which you can move and control rather precisely in a three dimensional place.

As you can see the catheter on the screen, I am moving it around very precisely. And even notice when I rotate the catheter, the temperature of the catheter, when I rotate it, and where it's going, I can basically do a 3-dimensional type of surgery on the patient's heart.

  • @XXXTVQ8IPLUS If you'r talking about cost, it was about 48 grand for me. The better your insurance the less of course would be your expense. Of course you will have to pay part of this bill, but it is worth it.This precedure is a life changing experience. It's the difference between tremendous suffering for the rest of your life or living normally . Money is no object in this senario.

  • But, of you are going to do, this procedure, make sure that use an ensite system for 3d mapping.

  • I had this done at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle 6 weeks ago. Complete success! After 7 years living with an arrythmia I feel great now. I saw much of the procedure as they did it, but this video explained it really well. Thanks for posting.

  • thank you for posting this! I am having this surgery soon and have been so worried about it. thanks for reassuring me.

  • This is Biosense Webster's CARTO(R) 3 System... The BEST EP system in the world!

  • I had this procedure done over two years ago. As my doctor and the doctor in the video said, I was home the next day. It took a couple of weeks for me to gain my strength, but it was a great success, thank God!

  • My husband had this done this past summer. Thank You for posting this.....
