Define cheating... If you mean by playing something in a way that makes it sound exactly the same just easier to play then you're wrong.

That's one of the factors that makes guitarists great. To be able to develop own methods of playing something and also making it easier, that's being a genius, not a cheater.

If however you mean playing something in a way that makes the song lose its crunch or power then I agree with you. Like alternate picking master of puppets.
